Tips for choosing the right EWP for your tree lopping business
When you’re weighing up whether to go for a 22m spider lift or a 27m machine, obviously you’ll realise that they can offer exactly that: 22m and 27m working height respectively.
But while both machines do give you the “up and over” reach you’ll need to get your arbor work done, there are a few key differences to bear in mind.
You may find that the bigger 27m spider lift can help you get more work done, more efficiently – and even in smaller spaces – than the 22m model.
Let’s take a look at the two machines.
Working more efficiently, faster, and safer with a spider lift
When you opt for the larger 27m spider lift, you’ll enjoy an additional 9 metres of horizontal outreach to go with the extra height. That makes a big difference in being able to get the job done – saving you time with roping off and being able to operate more quickly and efficiently.
There’s also the safety factor, and how this outreach protects your 27m spider lift from falling branches. Let’s say you were working with a 22m machine at full reach. When we take into account the basket overhang, and the reach of the operator in the basket, the spider lift machine below will still be only about 2 metres from the tree.
That means you’ll have to throw branches or rope them off to the side – or risk having them fall on your new machine and damage it.
Having this additional horizontal outreach also enables you to reduce the number of setups for the job. If you have a number of trees to work on, you’ll be able to reach more without moving the spider lift. We’ve had some clients tell us that, with the 27m lift, they can lop three trees in one setup. You can see how this greatly reduces the time spent on your job, which makes your business more profitable.
Other pros and cons to consider when choosing a spider lift
When you look at the 27m lift next to the 22m, you’ll instantly see that it’s a bigger, more solid machine with a sturdier boom. That means there’s less sway at reach, and the larger lift simply feels nicer to work from than the 22m – almost like a truck mounted lift in fact.
It’s not all bad news for the 22m model though. Since it’s 2 tonnes lighter, it is easier to transport to your job site than the 27m spider lift.
And does a larger machine mean you’ll have restricted access to a worksites? No! Surprisingly, the 27 m machine is actually narrower than the 22m. For narrow access jobs, the bigger model works better – so that you can use your spider lift inside shopping centres, at indoor stadiums, and more.
